Malibu Coastline, September 2011.
Harper’s Bazaar Arabia commissioned this cover at a pivotal moment. Fresh from her high-profile relationship with George Clooney and preparing for her debut on Dancing With The Stars, Elisabetta Canalis arrived on the Malibu coast ready to reshape her public narrative, from tabloid fixture to independent star. I was there to document how that transformation was built, frame by frame.
A Career-Defining Moment.
The timing was strategic: positioned between a highly publicized romance and an upcoming television debut, this cover would help rewrite the story. John Russo’s vision emphasized Elisabetta’s confidence and autonomy, while my behind-the-scenes documentation captured the professional machinery that goes into these transformative editorial moments.
Malibu Meets the Mediterranean.
The coastline gave the perfect stage for Elisabetta’s European sensibility set against California’s iconic natural beauty. Fashion editor Sally Matthews curated pieces from Dolce & Gabbana and Christian Dior that honored her Italian heritage while embracing the relaxed luxury of Malibu beach culture, an editorial that needed to speak to Middle Eastern audiences while capturing quintessentially American coastal glamour.
Coastal Challenges.
Salt air and designer pieces, wind and perfectly styled hair, natural light and precise makeup: every element needed protection and adaptation. Yet these challenges created the shoot’s most memorable moments. The images that worked best embraced rather than fought the coastal environment, finding harmony between editorial perfection and natural spontaneity.
Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior.
The contrast was striking: Italian and French luxury being styled against the raw Pacific backdrop, creating images that felt both timeless and distinctly contemporary. Working with natural ocean lighting and coastal winds required constant adaptation, reflector work, multiple lenses, and a willingness to let the environment into the frame.
Working alongside Evan Matthews on the behind-the-scenes story, we witnessed the collaborative choreography of high-fashion editorial photography: Sally Matthews’ precise styling decisions meeting the unpredictable elements of an outdoor shoot.
The Creative Vision
Harper’s Bazaar Arabia’s international perspective brought a unique angle to this California shoot: a cultural bridge that Elisabetta’s international appeal made possible, with styling that balanced her Mediterranean elegance against Malibu’s organic, unpredictable coastal environment.
International Impact
The September cover marked her successful transition into international fashion editorial, separate from entertainment tabloid coverage. The sophisticated imagery supported an evolving trajectory toward television and independent projects.
