Hoobastank

In 2010 The Collective asked for vintage promotional imagery for Is This The Day, a full acoustic rebuild of the Hoobastank catalog made for South Korea and Japan. A band known for The Reason and Crawling In The Dark, unplugged, headed for billboards in cities I might never visit.
The reframe
01 / Saddlerock RanchSaddlerock Ranch Winery keeps a large picture frame installation standing in the open field. Four musicians stepped inside it and the whole campaign clicked: familiar songs presented through a different frame. The metaphor cost nothing and carried everything.
The winery itself did the rest. Rustic, organic, nothing like the rock venues the band came from. The acoustic record wanted intimacy and the location already had it.
Ten songs rebuilt acoustic, plus new material, with Jesse Charland arriving on bass.
Vintage plates
Warm natural light, earth tones, film-like grain in the processing. The images had to feel like the acoustic versions had always existed next to the electric ones.

Two rooms
02 / The dayThe day split across two Malibu locations. The winery gave the public, artistic frames. The band-owned home studio gave the private ones: individual portraits, quieter, closer, matched to the introspection of acoustic performance.
Moving between the two produced a complete portrait of a band in transition, public performers on one side of the day and private artists on the other.
Billboards in cities I might never visit.
