The All American Rejects

The Collective booked the band into On the Rox, the private club above the Roxy on Sunset. Gives You Hell and Move Along were still all over the charts. The room was small, dim, and loaded with fifty years of rock history. The brief: make pictures that live up to it.
The room
01 / On the RoxOn the Rox sits one flight above the Roxy Theatre and holds maybe a hundred people. It has hosted rock royalty for decades. Shooting a band there connects them to that lineage whether they ask for it or not.
Close quarters was the advantage. No barricade, no long lens. Facial expressions and small gestures that die in an arena carry the whole frame in a club.

Slow shutter
Every blur was on purpose. Drag the shutter, hold the anchor points, let the movement paint. Study the performance long enough and you can call the swing of a guitar neck before it happens.

Made us look like rock gods.
Black and white
02 / The processingStripping the color was strategic, not stylistic. Monochrome pushes attention onto form, contrast, and the face. It reads as classic rock photography without costume.
High contrast processing matched the room: deep blacks, hard highlights, no gray middle. Good concert photos became record-sleeve photos.
